Mario Monti is an Italian economist who served as the Prime Minister of Italy from 2011 to 2013, leading a government of technocrats in the wake of the Italian debt crisis. Prof. Monti was European Commissioner and in charge of Competition from 1999 to 2005. He is currently Honorary President of Bruegel and President of the Bocconi University of Milan. Prof. Monti has been an international advisor to Goldman Sachs and a member of the advisory board of the Coca-Cola Company.

Biography

Since February 2014 he has been Chairman of the High-level Group on Own Resources of the European Union. Since May 2014 he has been a member of the Academie des Sciences morales et politiques. In November 2011 he was appointed Senator for life by the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano. He is the author of the report to the President of the European Commission on A New Strategy for the Single Market (May 2010). Previously he was Professor of Political Economy and Chancellor at Bocconi University, Director of the Political Economy Institute and President of the “Paolo Baffi” Centre of Monetary and Financial Economy. He has been the President of the Italian Group of the Trilateral Commission, a private North American – Japanese – West European initiative on matters of world public, political and economic concern. It is the most prestigious think-tank in the world, founded in 1973 to strengthen the economic links between Western Europe, the USA and the Far East.
