Jim McKelvey is an entrepreneur, inventor and artist widely known, together with Jack Dorsey as the co-founder of Square, a new mobile payment platform. The revolutionary service enables anyone to accept credit cards anywhere. Square has now more than 600 employees and is now valued at $6 billion.
His latest venture is LaunchCode, which he founded to remedy a problem he saw in a lack of IT talent growth, bringing together employers with potential employees through a radically different business model. He has also founded SixThirty, a financial services tech start up accelerator and Mira, a digital publishing company.
Jim serves as his own patron of the arts, using proceeds from his successful commercial enterprises to fund his passion – glassblowing. For 20 years, he has worked to capture the magic of glass in his art. As Chairman of the world’s largest gathering of glass artists in 2006, he strove to surprise and challenge other artists with his innovative glass faucets.
